Looking for a way to improve student achievement in your school? Are your teachers frustrated
with their current observation feedback? Are you looking to develop a more positive coaching
culture in your building? Traditionally, efforts within public schools to improve student outcomes
have not materialized with the desired results. Oftentimes, these efforts are implemented as
“one more thing.” This session focuses on the best strategy to improve the academic
outcomes–good Tier 1 instruction with student-centered feedback for teachers. It is highly
important that school leaders take up the mantle to be instructional leaders rather than
managerial ones.

Based on my experience as an alternative school principal for eight years, my staff and I were
able to build a positive culture in a not-so-positive environment. We turned the environment
around to the point that some students and parents asked to stay in the alternative setting or
purposely returned. Of course, not all, but the impact over my eight years was positive and
proven.

J.R. Green will lead a panel of distinguished education leaders on the question of whose job is it
to advocate for policies that best serve “all” students? “If not you then who, if not now then

education policy will continue to be inconsistent with what we know is best for the children we

Through the Community Engagement Initiative, we provide 300 children per year with 32 weeks
of high-quality after school and summer learning (28 weeks during the school year and 4 weeks
during the summer) which totals 384 extra learning hours (54 days) each year. Four days per
week, we transport children to 13 community sites belonging to our faith-based and nonprofit
community partners in Bluffton, Beaufort, Hilton Head, Lady’s Island, St. Helena, and Whale
Branch.

More than two-thirds of children reportedly have experienced at least 1 traumatic event by age
16, and trauma impacts the way our students show up in the classroom through behavior and
learning challenges. In order for our students to learn they must feel safe, regulated and
connected. This session will provide participants with the knowledge and research-based
strategies they need to cultivate a sense of felt safety in their learning environments through
trauma-informed practices, intentional connections, and brain science.
